Japanese short comedy stories are called “conte” (コント) borrowed from a French word. Let’s enjoy conte with English subtitles by a Japanese comedy duo, Impulse(インパルス). They are good at making laugh by creating strange situations and characters that might happen in ordinary life.

Conte #1: Convenience Store Burglar
A convenience store burglar covering his face with pantyhose tried to get away after he got money, but a clerk caught the tail of pantyhose again and again to give the burglar unnecessary helps such as giving him food and telling him safer way to escape.

Conte #2: Extremely Overqualified Applicant
A small factory manager conducted a job interview, but he was surprised to know that the applicant was extremely overqualified.

Conte #3: Investigation
A man was investigated by the police. He acted like a psycho killer, but what he did was just a rail fare cheat.

We will have a discussion time in English and Japanese–all levels welcome. Grab a beer or your favorite drink, laugh, and enjoy the conversation!

5:00 PM to 7:00 PM PDT

Join us for Japanese-style Mahjong online using https://mahjongsoul.yo-star.com/

We are going to try using the site Mahjong Soul to play Riichi. It’s actually a pretty fun site, and you can use it to learn how to play. We’re going to have a tournament page set up for this group, but you can also use this site to play against the computer and practice your skills.

Everyone will need to log in first to get their user ID number and send that to us so we can give you permission to enter our tournament.

If you sent us your user ID before, you don’t have to send us again.

Here are the instructions for how to do that:

First, go to this website: https://mahjongsoul.yo-star.com/

Click on Start Game

Click Login

A box will pop up where you can login with a new account:

Enter your email address.
Click “send code”
You will then have 60 seconds to check your email for the verification code and enter it to log in. Copy and paste or type in the code in the log-in dialogue box where it says “verification code.” Then click “log in”.

Note: We sometimes have to try this more than once because we didn’t get the email in time for the 60 seconds to be up. Once the 60 seconds is up, that specific code will be useless, and you’ll have to try again. If this happens to you, click “send code” again and try refreshing your email a few times.

Once you are logged in, click on Tournament Match and then Tournament Lobby. Look in the top right corner for your ID number. Write down the ID number and then email it to Masaki at MasakiF@encorepreneurcafe.com or message him through Meetup.

When we have received your ID number, we can grant you access to the Portland Mahjong Meetup tournament. You’ll see the name of our tournament in the “Tournament Lobby” on Mahjong Soul, but you won’t be able to enter it until we have received your ID number.

In the Tournament Lobby, please enter Tournament ID “502558” to join “Portland Mahjong Meetup”.

Once you are in the Portland Mahjong Meetup tournament page, you can go to the home screen to chat with us and other players. Click on “Prepare for Match” to join a game. Or, go to the Watch tab to watch a game.

After your first round is over , you can click on “Prepare for Match” again to join the next game. If you have any problems or questions, let’s use the chat function in the tournament page to communicate.

If anyone is having trouble accessing the site or tournament, you can message us through Meetup or call us at 503-954-2837

We appreciate your donation through Paypal at: https://www.paypal.me/encorepreneurcafe to support our organization and keep our programs going.
Suggested donation: $5
Of course, you can just join without donation.

Thanks everyone!

Osaka is the second largest metropolitan area in Japan and known for its distinct culture. The contrast between Tokyo and Osaka is always a hot topic. The stereotype says Tokyo is serious and Osaka is funny. In fact, Osaka is recognized as a “comedy city” and many comedians are from Osaka.
Osaka comedians use their own dialect “Osaka-ben” in their performance. That is why Osaka-ben is widely known among all Japanese people.
Manzai is a traditional Japanese style of stand-up comedy. Manzai usually involves two performers: Boke (funny man) & Tsukkomi (straight man).

Masaki, Osaka-native, will present basics of Osaka-ben and Manzai.
– History to be a comedy city
– Osaka people stereotype
– Easy tips to convert standard Japanese into Osaka-ben
– Manzai basics – What are neta, ochi, furi?
*Presentation is in English.

Then, we will watch Manzai with English subtitle performed by Downtown, the most popular Manzai duo from Osaka.

We will have a discussion time in English and Japanese–all levels welcome. Grab a beer or your favorite drink, laugh, and enjoy the conversation!

Tokyo 03 (東京03) is a Japanese comedy trio known for their elaborated scenarios. Their plots deeply describe the contemporary Japanese “Salary-man” (white-caller worker)’s sorrow. They are excellent about making fun of ordinary men’s trifle pride and unnecessary considerations. They are so popular especially among Japanese Millennial that their stage tickets are difficult to obtain.

Tokyo 03 members are Iizuka, Toyomoto, and Kakuta. Iizuka usually plays a role of tsukkomi (straight man). Toyomoto and Kakuta play roles of Boke (funny man).

Let’ learn a real-life Japanese culture together through their short stories with English subtitle.

Scenario 1: A man visited a real estate agency to find his new apartment. His budget was so low, but an agent tried to make unlikely negotiations with property owners again and again only because he wanted to look capable.

Scenario 2: Marketing reps from a convenience store chain met a cake shop owner to discuss the collaboration, but they were panicked after they made rude mistakes during the meeting.

Scenario 3: A man secretly got engaged with his female boss. He confessed it to his coworker. He asked his coworker to pretend that he didn’t know anything when she showed up as a surprising guest.

From the director that brought you Battle Royale! Kinji Fukasaku’s Black Lizard is a zany jewel heist film from 1968 featuring a spectacular female jewel thief and her battle of wits with Japan’s number one detective. The movie is in Japanese with English subtitles.

Please join us online on April 22 as we attempt our first-ever virtual movie night. We will be showing the film via TwoSeven, an online platform that allows users to watch videos together and to chat together at the same time. This is an experiment for us, so it may not be completely smooth, but we want to give it a try. We are hoping to do a brief intro to the movie and, if we can, a discussion after.

In order to join the movie, you will need to set up an account and download the plugin for Firefox or Chrome internet browsers (it doesn’t work with Safari or Internet Explorer). You will have the option to join in with video chat or audio…please choose whichever you are comfortable with. If we are able to have a discussion after the movie, it will be easier to do this with video chat.

You can sign up for an account by going to this website and clicking on “Log in” in the top right of the screen:

https://twoseven.xyz/

Go here for the extension for Firefox:

Go here for the extension for Chrome:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/twoseven-extension/cjdnfmjmdligcpfcekfmenlhiopehjkd?hl=en-US

We will send out the link to join the movie on the day of the event, and we’ll also put it here in the description/comments. Please feel free to join in 15-20 minutes early if you are worried about getting everything to work.

You can watch a preview of the movie here:

His slapstick humor, physical comedy and naïve persona made him a household name in the country for decades. Generations of children grew up watching his comedy skits and dance routines.- NY Times

He has been loved by all Japanese from kids to seniors and even by non-Japanese speakers. He has made lots of funny characters such as Baka Tonosama (stupid lord) and Henna Ojisan (weird uncle) as well as funny moves such as Hige Dance (Mustache Dance).

His works are like a “textbook” of Japanese comedies. Laugh and learn Japanese by this “textbook”.

All levels are welcome. We will communicate in both English and Japanese.

We will meet using Zoom.

Blending techniques from Aikido, Qigong, and Yoga, this class includes light stretching, self-massage, and guided breathing. Relax your body, improve balance, and increase function. This is low-impact exercise for all ability levels and ages.

The core focus of this practice is being conscious of and in control of that which we are normally unaware: the breath. In kokyuho (energy breathing exercise, used as part of Aikido and Yoga), it is important to direct our consciousness to our bones, the core of our body. We consciously relax the bones, gradually relaxing the organs and muscles.

The class starts with individual stretching, followed by relaxing exercises. From there, we will continue to the kokyuho breathing exercises.

This is a good exercise for those wanting to improve:
-organ function
-metabolism
-balance
-fall prevention
-lower back problems
-knee issues
-eye strain

We do not do any forced movements, so even those who have not exercised in a long time or are not good at sports can enjoy participating. The soft movements gently relax your entire body, improving organ function and metabolism. All the exercises in this class are done standing or sitting in a chair.

The class fee is $10, which can be paid on-site via cash or credit card. You can also pre-pay via PayPal here: https://www.paypal.me/encorepreneurcafe

About the Instructor
Mayumi Hasegawa has been an entrepreneur and designer since 2000. In 2009, she lost her voice due to hard work and stress. She joined a kokyuho class and soon after regained her voice, which she had lost for one year. She continued to practice kokyuho, and this led to her study of qigong, yoga, and aikido. From these practices, she established her own energy breathing exercise.

As a Husky parent, she has collected a lot of dog hair off and on, and wondered how she could use it. It was a few months after her first Husky had passed away when she decided to make his replica using his hair and wool by needle felting method. It was from her deep sadness of losing her dog. Years passed, and she has made a lot of Mini-Pups for her customers. Each time she put a lot of love and passion for the animals in the Mini-Pups.
