EventTokyo Story

Wednesday, April 24, 2019
5:30 PM to 8:30 PM

The Encorepreneur Cafe
1548 NE 15th Ave. Portland

Come on by this free meetup, where we will watch Yasujiro Ozu’s 1953 classic, Tokyo Story (subtitled in English). Erin and Masaki will discuss the cultural context of the film beforehand and give club members some things to look out for while watching the movie.

This film explores family dynamics in post-war Japan when an aging couple travel to Tokyo to visit their busy adult children and things do not end up as the couple expected. It explores the fundamental nature of the relationship between parents and children, and although this may not sound like a thrilling plot to some, it encourages us to consider how we form connections and our imperfect search for meaning. Tokyo Story is often heralded as one of the best films of all time and Ozu’s greatest work.

Please arrive on time so we can start on time! It’s okay to show up a little bit early if you like.

We’ll use our projector and screen for watching the film. This is a free event, but we ask for donations for food and tea. Hope to see you there!

5:50 pm — film starts
8:05 pm — film ends
8:10 pm — post-film discussion

About this club
For the first couple of films, we want to choose those that demonstrate different aspects of Japanese culture. The Encorepreneur Cafe is a co-working space that is owned by a Japanese company. We are currently working on some new programs to share our Japanese culture with the public, so we started this film club as one way to do that.
