Many people dream of traveling in retirement, while others\nseem to focus more on taking on the world when they\u2019re young. For some people,\ntravel is a life-long habit. Really, it has benefits for any age and all generations,\nbut we\u2019re here to talk about why it\u2019s an important part of retirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A sense of urgency<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As we age, everything gains a sense of urgency. Maybe you\nhad no chance at adventure travel when you were young. Maybe there is a\ndebilitating, old-age ailment in your family. In any case, it can feel very\nimportant to get out there and experience the world while you can. That\u2019s not\nto say that there aren\u2019t plenty of travel options for those with disabilities.\nBut that doesn\u2019t lessen the feeling of urgency\u2014to have these experiences while\nit is less difficult to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Relax and Renew<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

According to AARP, more Baby Boomers are traveling to get\naway from it all. In a 2017 survey, 49% said they traveled relax (up from 38%\npreviously) and 47% were looking to escape their day-to-day (up from 39%).  Travel can get you out of your routine and\naway from regular demands of everyday life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s Good for your Health<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Bryce Hruska, assistant professor of public health at\nSyracuse University, has found that vacation is actually good for your heart.\nHe writes, \u201cWhat we found is that people who vacation more frequently in the\npast 12 months have a lowered risk for metabolic syndrome and metabolic\nsymptoms. Metabolic syndrome is a collection of risk factors for cardiovascular\ndisease. If you have more of them, you are at higher risk of cardiovascular\ndisease.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe your doctor should write you a prescription?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keeping Active<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Travel keeps you active in mind and body. The social,\nplanning, navigation, and problem-solving skills required to have a successful\ntrip all contribute to keeping you sharp. Another set of skills, those of\nlearning about a new culture and keeping an open mind to their way of life, can\nalso be honed in travel. Lastly, people tend to walk a lot when they travel, so\nit can be good exercise, too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Memorable Family Experiences<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This can go along with a sense of urgency, but travel and\nvacation are great ways to create memorable experiences with family and a\nsignificant other. One of my favorite memories of my teenage years was visiting\nMexico with my parents\u2014our last family vacation before I became an adult.\nLikewise, for my mother\u2019s 70^{th<\/sup> birthday, our whole family rented a\nhouse on the beach. Both important transitions that I\u2019ll never forget because\nof the travel experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n}

Making New Friends<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Travel can be easier when you pool your resources with\nothers and increase the likelihood of making new friends or deepening\nrelationships. Group travel, cruises, and travel with friends helps you use the\nexpertise and experience of others to ensure you have a wonderful time. More\nand more, people want an \u201coff the beaten path\u201d experience, where you are more\nlikely to have authentic encounters with locals. Who knows, you might make a\nlifelong friend that you can host in your hometown sometime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Share your Experience with Others <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

And, finally, when you get back from your fabulous vacation, you\u2019ll have something to share with friends and family back home. Hopefully you\u2019ll have snapped some photos along the way!
