Japan has a long history of gag/comedy manga and anime, and which are the great sources to learn Japanese humor. We have picked up a short comedy anime each from 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s.

1990s – Doraemon (ドラえもん) is one of the most popular manga/anime series in Japan. The anime started in 1973 and is still going on even though the author, Fujiko F. Fujio, died in 1996. Doraemon has been loved by all the people from kids to elders. Doraemon, a cat robot from the 22nd century, is sent to help Nobita, a young boy, who scores poor grades and is frequently bullied by his two classmates, Gian and Suneo. Doraemon has a four-dimensional pouch in which he stores unexpected gadgets.

2000s – Cromartie High School (魁！クロマティ高校) follows the everyday life of Takashi Kamiyama and his odd classmates at Cromartie High School, an infamous school for delinquents. Kamiyama was originally just another above-average student until he decided to enroll at Cromartie. Everyone else at Cromartie assumes that he’s the toughest kid in school, since a rabbit would never go into a den of lions. All the names of the schools in this anime were borrowed from the foreign baseball players who played at the Nippon Professional Baseball League in 1980-90s.

2010s – Nichijou (日常) is a surreal comedy of people around three high-school girls. The word “Nichijou” means an “ordinary life,” but the events happened in this anime are far from “ordinary.” Random and/or outlandish events regularly occur throughout the series, mainly through the mundane situations each character goes through.
